肖立华教授为国家特聘专家、美国寄生虫学会杰出贡献奖“Henry Baldwin Ward Medal”获得者,基金委海外资深学者研究基金获得者。1990年获美国缅因大学博士学位,之后在俄亥俄州立大学从事博士后3年,1993年起在美国疾病预防控制中心工作25年,并长期担任Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory, Waterborne Diseases Prevention Branch的Team Leader。

长期从事隐孢子虫等人兽共患病原的研究,是隐孢子虫分子流行病学领域的开拓者。揭示了隐孢子虫的宿主适应性特征,纠正了之前认为的只有一个隐孢子虫虫种的认知,建立了国际公认的虫种命名标准以及虫种和亚型区分方法。阐明了隐孢子虫在全球的传播和扩散机制,提出人兽共患虫种的传播与集约化养殖密切相关的观点,并揭示了病原人兽共患性的潜在遗传基础。揭示隐孢子虫高致病力亚型的产生源自遗传重组,定位了致病力相关基因区域,为病原主动监测平台的建立提供了科学依据。

在Nature、Cell Host Microbe、Nat Commun、Clin Microbe Rev和Trends Parasitol等领域内权威期刊发表论文520篇,H指数97。自2018年以来5次入选Web of Science全球高被科学家榜单,担任Clin Microbiol Rev和Parasitol Re副主编和其他8个国际期刊编委。为世界各地培养了澳大利亚总理奖获得者、中国杰出青年科学基金获得者和中国“国家百千万人才工程”入选者等众多优秀科研人员。基于其在领域的突出贡献,曾获美国寄生虫学会杰出成就奖以及中国侨界贡献奖,具有国际公认的学术造诣和影响力。
